Open mobile platform that includes Linux kernel, middleware, application framework, SDKs for mobile software development, and application developer workbench tools, resulting in faster, cheaper smartphone and multi-mode phone apps that can be tailored to specific markets

Team:
Local executive and marketing staff, with India-based developers and (soon) documentation team

Tasks:

  • Collaborate with local and remote subject-matter experts to understand the product, design appropriate documentation deliverables, and establish schedules and budgets
  • Work with Hyderabad-based tech pubs firm to recruit, train, and manage all aspects of content development and delivery, ensuring synchronization with product development (also based in India)
  • Direct XML/DITA structured-content initiative, provide direction necessary to achieve all goals, and travel to India when necessary to optimize operations

Required:

  • Working knowledge of open systems (especially Linux), developer tools, application development platforms, middleware, and/or networking
  • Strong information-architecting skills and understanding of third-party developers’ requirements
  • Experience assembling and successfully managing remote documentation teams
  • Demonstrated ability to create accurate, usable developer reference documentation independently and from scratch

Desired:

  • Proven ability to implement effective structured authoring framework — including designing templates, troubleshooting, and training teams — ideally using FrameMaker
  • Ability to read C source code then support less-senior, India-based Tech Writers in creating API doc and developer tutorials
  • Willingness to travel to India occasionally, and participate in conference calls at unusual hours

Summary:
This ambitious open mobile platform developer needs a technically sophisticated staff (or contract-to-staff) Lead Technical Writer / ‘Working’ Publications Manager to collaborate with local executives and marketers, and remote developers, then assemble and direct the efforts of an offshore documentation team. You’ll travel to India occasionally to train and manage those Tech Writers, and assume overall responsibility for timely, on-budget delivery of accurate developer doc.

The ideal candidate may have worked at, or documented the integration of products from, Wind River Systems, Apple (iPhone), or PalmSource.
